When do I start training my puppy?

You’ve just introduced a new family member into your life. Whether they’re a rescue or the pick of the litter - all puppies need training in order to transition into your family and to be successful in adulthood! So when do you know it’s the best time to start training your dog?

This question is one of the most frequently asked questions I receive. And today, I’m going to be giving you all the information you need to know when it’s the right time to start with your puppy specifically!

“My puppy is 10 weeks old...is it too young to start training?”

The answer to this is absolute not! 10 weeks old is prime time to start socializing your dog. In fact, you can start training as soon as 8 weeks old! I always say the sooner the better. We want to establish healthy behaviors at the very beginning so our puppy sees them as expectations as opposed to simply doing tricks.

Best Technique To Train With

There are many different training styles out there. It can be hard to know which one is the best to start with your puppy! The method that I recommend using is Positive Reinforcement based training. This training method focuses on uplifting and rewarding our dog for the good behaviors and redirecting them when they commit the bad ones!

Start your puppy as soon as possible with training. You’ll want to emphasize the behaviors you want to see and redirect the behaviors you’re trying to deter. Focus on the basic obedience first! Once you learn your dog’s personality and what drives them, you can expand in the other outlets of training and stimulation!
